THE DANA FOUNDATION

The Dana Foundation’s Web site offers a wealth of news and information about the brain and brain research.  Here is just a sampling of what you will find:

BrainWebA service for patients, families, and caregivers of those with a brain disease or disorder offers links to Internet sites with validated current information useful for the lay person.  Covering 25 common brain diseases and disorders, these links provide the latest research, treatment options, support for families and caregivers, and sources for more information.

Brain Connections: Your Source Guide to Information on Brain Diseases and Disorders (United States): An online guide that lists more than 275 organizations in the US likely to help those looking for information, referrals, and other guidance in connection with brain-related disorders.  Listings provide mailing addresses, toll-free numbers, e-mail and Web site addresses, and identify the primary services each organization provides.

Cerebrum: The Dana Forum on Brain Science: An online, interdisciplinary magazine of ideas about how brain science is changing our lives.  Articles and book features from the world’s leading scientists and scholars tell the story in a language you can understand, with the evidence, arguments, and context you need to reach your own conclusions.  Cerebrum authors interpret, apply, and challenge brain research in voices that are original, authoritative, and provocative.

Annual Progress Report on Brain Research: Describes and interprets the important advances in neuroscience of the previous year, contributing to better diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of the numerous diseases that affect the brain.

BrainWork: The Neuroscience Newsletter: A bimonthly newsletter for general readers that appears both online and in print. BrainWork reports news from clinical and basic studies on the brain.  BrainWork goes behind the news to talk with the scientists who are making the discoveries about brain health and to find out why these discoveries are important.

Dana Press Books: Dana Press publishes non-fiction health and popular science books for general readers with a special focus on the brain, immunology, and arts education.

American Academy of Neurology (AAN): An international association of more than 21,000 neurologists and neuroscience professionals. The website includes links to science resources, science news, and a library of publications.

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS): AAAS is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science around the world. The website includes science news and resources for educators, students, and kids and parents.

National Institutes of Health A to Z Health Topics : Search for information and resources on an extensive list of consumer health topics from A to Z, including quick links to information about child and teen health, men’s health, minority health, seniors’ health, wellness and lifestyle, and women’s health.

Medline Plus: A service of the US National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, this site provides information and resources on 750 health topics.  Medline Plus also has extensive information about drugs, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, interactive patient tutorials, and the latest health news. Information is available in over 40 languages. 

Society for Neuroscience’s Link to ResourcesA link library of neuroscience resources, including conditions, disorders, and diseases; fact sheets; experts and specialists; clinical trial information; information specific for students and teachers, parents, and young people; and much more. 

International Brain Research Organization (IBRO)IBRO promotes excellence in research and teaching world wide. The website’s resources include information on international research funding programs, public awareness campaigns, publications, and more.  

British Science AssociationA registered charity which exists to advance the public understanding, accessibility and accountability of the sciences and engineering. The website offers information on science events across the UK, as well as other resources. 

The Dana Centre (London) A collaboration among the British Association for the Advancement of Science, the European Dana Alliance for the Brain, and the Science Museum of London, a place for the public to take part in exciting, informative and innovative debates about contemporary science, technology and culture.

Meeting of Minds—European Citizens’ Deliberation on Brain ScienceA report resulting from a discussion among the general public on cutting-edge science and what should be done with our new-found knowledge of the brain.  

National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA), UK NESTA is an independent body with a mission to make the UK more innovative. The site includes research and policy information on a number of scientific issues.

United States
National Institutes of HealthThe NIH, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency in the United States for conducting and supporting medical research. Each of the Institute’s divisions has a website with information on diseases, disorders, research, resources, and more. Among the NIH’s 27 Institutes and Centers are: 

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)The mission of NINDS is to reduce the burden of neurological disease. 

National Institute of Aging (NIA): The NIA aims to improve the health and well-being of older Americans through research, and to communicate with the public and interested groups on health and research advances. 

National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)NIMH is the largest scientific organization in the world dedicated to research focused on the understanding, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders and the promotion of mental health. 

 National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)NIDA leads the nation in bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction through support and conduct of research across a broad range of disciplines and rapid and effective dissemination of results of that research to improve drug abuse and addiction prevention, treatment, and policy. 

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)NIAAA conducts research focused on improving the treatment and prevention of alcoholism and alcohol-related problems to reduce the enormous health, social, and economic consequences of this disease. 

United Kingdom
Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology - Science and Society (POST): (link to: ) POST is the UK Parliament’s in-house source of independent, balanced and accessible analysis of public policy issues related to science and technology. 

NHS Direct: Founded to provide information and advice about health, illness and health services, NHS Direct offers 24-hour health care information and services, both online and by telephone. A “Health Encyclopedia” offers a wealth of resources on health issues, including information on the brain. 

The Department of Health (DH)The Department of Health exists to improve the health and well-being of people in England.  The website includes health, social care, and policy information, including sections on neurological conditions, mental health, and stroke.
