WHAT: | Students from 29 New York City-area high schools will participate in the 2013 Regional Brain Bee Competition, moderated by Michael E. Goldberg, M.D., David Mahoney Professor of Brain and Behavior at Columbia University, and judged by Columbia University assistant professors Ai Yamamoto, Ph.D., and Clarissa Waites, Ph.D., and associate professor Wesley B. Grueber, Ph. D. The event is presented by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives, Columbia University Neuroscience Outreach, and the Columbia Neuroscience Society, and co-sponsored by NRTA: AARP’s Educator Community. The Brain Bee is a Q & A competition that tests high school students' knowledge of neuroscience. Students are quizzed on the brain and how it relates to memory, emotions, intelligence, behaviors, and disorders. The top three winners will receive cash prizes and other awards. The first-place winner will receive an all-expenses paid trip to compete in the National Brain Bee, March 2-4, at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Following the Brain Bee, all attendees are invited to attend a family brain fair, at which they can participate in hands-on brain science games and experiments.

WHO: | Twenty-nine public and private high schools in the Bronx (2), Brooklyn (6), Manhattan (9), Queens (5), Staten Island (5), and Westchester (2) will be represented by up to two students each. A full list of participating schools is available on request.
