 The target may well have been in the center of the orexin system in the lateral hypothalamus. Known effects of its absence (knockout or narcolepsy) indicate powerful effects on movement, alertness, etc; and its widespread distribution to ctx, locus coeruleus, etc would be compatible with the mnemonic "improvement", especially the "deja vu" episode reminiscent of REM.
