Physical properties of memory

 I would be interested to know more about the physical properties of memory. E.G. are memories 'chemical'? Do they consist of specific neurotransmitters such as proteins or other molecules? If so, do we know anything about which chemicals are involved? Also, is there any evidence that memories my become part of the cellular structure of the neurons themselves?
