Abid, circuitry is mapped in a fairly simple way. Retrograde and anterograde labeling methods can be used to find out what neurons are connected. The neurons take these dyes up and transport them through their axons. When a treated brain slice is viewed under a microscope you can see what regions of brain communicate with one another. Once you have this info you can validate your findings by using drugs or electrical stimulation to "turn on" and "turn off" a group of neurons in one area and measure the electrical responses in the region you think is connected. If the area of interest is connected in some way to the area you stimulate then they are probably communicating in some way.

Basal ganglia is one of the most complex and least understood mechanism in the field of neurology,I am just curious, how researcher find the pathways of basal ganglia and determine that basal ganglia is responsible for memory controlling and also other automatic control such as urinary bladder movement control. My degree is in economics, but I have great interest in neuroscience.

I am doing research to try and help one of my students who is having great difficulty with both short and long term memory due to a basal ganglia stroke at birth.
