Digital Engagement Manager

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Digital Engagement Manager will serve an essential role in strengthening the Dana Foundation’s digital presence, growing its diverse audiences, and helping to build the organization’s brand identity as the leader in the emerging field of neuroscience and society. This is a full-time position with a hybrid work schedule based in New York City.

The Digital Engagement Manager will collaborate closely with the Director of Communications and the Design and Editorial Manager to develop and implement a cohesive digital strategy in support of the Foundation’s mission and values that includes management of website content, social media, and email marketing. They will ensure web and social media best practices are met and keep abreast of new and emerging media technologies in an ever-evolving digital landscape. Now is an exciting time to join our communications team as the Foundation prepares to launch its new brand and website later this year, entering a new chapter in its almost 75-year history.

The Foundation pursues its mission through grants and partnerships. These include funding grant initiatives under the Neuroscience & Society focus, including Brain Awareness Week, an annual global education initiative, and organizational partnerships with the BRAIN Initiative Alliance and the Science Philanthropy Alliance to amplify work in the neuroscience and society space.

Key responsibilities:

Audience Engagement

  • Maintain and update social media management standards, policies, and rules of engagement; investigate new tools for efficient and effective posting, tracking, and reporting
  • Manage the Foundation’s social media platforms, including scheduling, writing posts, and moderating online conversations; occasional live coverage of events
  • Propose new ways to reach the Foundation’s audiences, which include science communicators, neuroscientists, ethicists and social scientists, professional organizations, postsecondary institutions, and philanthropies
  • Oversee online advertising campaigns and Google Ads (through a Google Ads Grant)
  • Analyze performance data and create and execute testing strategies to ensure maximum performance of content
  • Respond in a timely manner to communications from the public via social media, website contact form, and newsletter
  • Maintain and enhance relationships with Foundation partners through cross-promotional opportunities

Website Management

  • Upload, edit, and manage content on WordPress website
  • Suggest new optimization methods to improve user experience for visitors and for CMS users
  • Produce monthly analytics report
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Foundation’s web development support contractor

Communications Support

  • Write, edit, and research, as needed; includes activities such as proofreading copy and identifying new and promising media partners
  • Create compelling graphics, interactives, and videos in collaboration with the Design and Editorial Manager
  • Light travel (5%) to participate in meetings

Desired skills and characteristics:

  • Strong interest in neuroscience and how it can be used to benefit society

  • Working knowledge of established and emerging social media platforms, including the advertising components of each
  • Demonstrated success in running social media campaigns
  • Excellent digital networking and influencing skills
  • Experience with search engine optimization
  • Expertise in WordPress, Sprout, MailChimp, Constant Contact; proficient in Google Workspace, Google Ads, and HTML
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Some knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign, and Canva

Required education and work experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5-7 years in science, health, or nonprofit digital communications

Salary range:

The salary range for this position is $72,000 to $85,000

Dana Foundation Fellow in Neuroscience & Society

The Dana Foundation seeks a Dana Fellow in Neuroscience & Society for a two-year fellowship. The Dana Fellow will have the exciting opportunity to assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of Dana Foundation grants and other programmatic activities. They will be an integral member of the Dana Foundation’s Neuroscience & Society program team and will routinely work with colleagues throughout the Foundation, including Foundation leadership. This Fellow will be supervised by the Director of the Dana Education program and will primarily support the work of that program, though there is extensive collaboration across the Foundation’s three programmatic areas. Also, this Fellow will join two additional Dana Fellows in Neuroscience & Society who support the Dana NextGen and Dana Frontiers programs.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Survey relevant literature and identify trends and themes at the intersection of Neuroscience & Society
  • Survey the landscape of neuroscience education resources and initiatives to identify gaps or needs in Neuroscience & Society
  • Identify and maintain a roster of experts in education and other fields relevant to Neuroscience & Society
  • Identify new opportunities for Neuroscience & Society programmatic work
  • Participate in all stages of grant-making including:
    • ideation and analysis to create and implement funding opportunities
    • researching different models of grantmaking and evaluation
    • convening occasional small roundtables of experts
    • working with applicants and grantees
    • reviewing applications
    • managing grants
  • Work collaboratively across Dana programmatic areas as a thought partner with Dana Foundation program staff
  • Work collaboratively with Dana Foundation communications staff
  • Support the coordination of the Brain Awareness Week campaign
  • Represent the Foundation at conferences, meetings, and other professional convenings
  • 10% of time will be spent on professional development activities, including coursework and training (approved and paid for by the Foundation)

Qualifications:

  • Master’s, Ph.D., or other advanced degree in neuroscience, science education, biology, psychology, bioengineering, philosophy, sociology, science & technology studies, public health, health policy, or related field
  • Postdoctoral or post-terminal degree work experience is desirable but not essential
  • Demonstrated commitment to neuroscience education through participation in formal or informal education and/or outreach activities
  • Strong alignment with the values of the Dana Foundation, including a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, particularly as it concerns underrepresented perspectives in neuroscience
  • Ability to work as a member of teams consisting of both internal and external partners
  • Ability to synthesize and analyze information and to report on findings in an efficient manner
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate purpose of meetings and other activities to potential participants
  • Excellent written communication skills, particularly in drafting and editing a variety of materials with scientific content (letters, white papers, summary documents), as well as preparing presentations with scientific and programmatic content
  • Attention to detail with strong documentation, workflow management, and organizational skills
  • Creative in approach to problem-solving with the ability to take advantage of emerging opportunities
  • Proactive, with a strong work ethic and the ability to meet deadlines and understand priorities
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure with multiple tasks

Additional details:

  • This will be a full-time, two-year fellowship
  • The anticipated/desired start date is July 2023
  • The position can be full-time remote
  • The Dana Foundation will support occasional travel to the Dana offices in NYC 
  • Occasional travel to scientific meetings/conferences will be supported by the Foundation
